Job Description:

This is a structural engineering position for the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities' (DOTPF) Bridge Section. Engineering Assistant (EA) II and III descriptions are provided below:

EA II: Under general supervision of a licensed engineer, this level performs basic structural engineering analysis and calculations in the design, repair, construction, inspection, and load rating of bridges and other transportation structures. This position applies accepted structural and other civil engineering practices in evaluating bridge needs and completing bridge layouts, designs, and analyses.

EA III: Under general direction of a licensed engineer, this level performs journey level (sub-professional) structural engineering analysis and calculations in the design, repair, construction, inspection, and load rating of bridges and other transportation structures. This position applies accepted structural and other civil engineering practices in evaluating bridge needs and completing bridge layouts, designs, and analyses. In addition, prepares details, calculations, quantities, and writes draft construction specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Load rate timber, steel and concrete bridge members.
  • Check the structural and geometric bridge designs completed by licensed engineers.
  • Assist with federally required bridge inspections.
  • Assist with office and field work associated with the bridge load instrumenting program.

Desirable skills and strengths:

  • Structural Engineering capabilities and education consistent with position. MS Civil Engineering with an emphasis in structures or closely related field is preferred.
  • Familiarity with the AASHTO "LRFD Bridge Design Specification."
  • Proficiency with commercially available structural analysis software.
  • Familiarity with strain gages and data collection systems.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the II or III level depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. Please respond to all of the minimum qualification questions.

Minimum Qualifications:

Engineering Assistant II:
Bachelor’s degree, or the equivalent from an institution accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying;
AND
One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant I with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.
OR
Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years must be as an Engineering Technician Journey level with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution: Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience. (3 semester or 4 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

Note: The employing department will identify Engineering-In-Training (EIT) positions.

Engineering Assistant III:
Bachelor's degree or the equivalent, from an institution accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying;
AND
Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level as an Engineering Assistant II with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Additional engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
