Series Description:


Class Definition:
Under the general supervision of a Registered Nurse, performs the full range of practical nursing duties in a State institution, such as Alaska Psychiatric Institute, Harborview Developmental Center, Pioneers' Home, correctional institution or medical facility.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This class is distinguished from Nursing Aide by the latter's responsibility for providing basic patient care which is primarily aimed at assisting patients with personal hygiene. Licensed Practical Nurses are distinguished from Registered Nurses by the latter's performance of the full range of nursing duties.

Examples of Duties:
Administers and charts prescribed medications and treatments, including oral medications, hypodermic injections, catheterizations and enemas; takes and charts temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure.

Observes patients' behavior and reactions to medications and reports significant changes to the supervisor; records nursing notes on patients.

Confers with ward and unit supervisors on treatment problems.

Provides general supervision to personal care, treatment, activities and welfare of patients in assigned wards, units or wings.

Actively encourages interaction with patients and shows, by example, how to relate to patients; encourages patients by using a positive approach and attempts to redirect grossly abnormal behavior into acceptable channels.

Participates as a team member in the development of a therapeutic plan for each patient; assists team in developing a specific plan by providing information and recommendations gained through interaction with patients.

Assists in restraining combative or self-abusive patients.

Participates in or conducts informal and formal counseling sessions with patients according to the prescribed treatment plan, at Alaska Psychiatric Institute.

Performs the duties of charge nurse for a shift in the absence of Registered Nurse.

May provide guidance, training and direction to aides in basic patient care.

Performs related work as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of practical nursing.

Considerable knowledge of commonly used medications and their actions and side effects.

Considerable knowledge of the needs of patients.

Skill in the application of practical nursing techniques.

Ability to relate and interpret medical data.

Ability to observe and evaluate reactions and changes in the physical and mental condition of patients.

Ability to operate assigned health care equipment.

Ability to maintain routine operating records and to prepare periodic reports.

Ability to develop therapeutic relationships with patients.


Minimum Qualifications:
A diploma or certificate from an accredited school in practical nursing and eligibility for licensure as a practical nurse with the State of Alaska.

Special Requirements: Physical strength to lift, assist and transfer patients.
