Series Description:


Class Definition:
Under immediate supervision, performs oral prophylaxis, takes X-rays and instructs patients in personal oral hygiene in a State correctional institution.

Distinguishing Characteristics:


Examples of Duties:
Performs oral prophylaxis for prevention and treatment of periodontal disease using various scaling and polishing instruments for selected patients.

Examines patients' oral cavity, performs oral radiographic surveys and charts existing oral condition of patients; reports evidence of disease or cavities to the dentist.

Instructs patient in oral hygiene including flossing and tooth brushing techniques, bridge care and the common causes of tooth decay and periodontal disease.

Performs recordkeeping procedures such as scheduling patients, recording medical and dental history and recording treatment administered.

Applies topical fluorides and desensitizing agents.

Performs related work as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of the methods and techniques of dental hygiene.

Working knowledge of the equipment and materials used in a dental office.

Ability to think and act quickly in emergencies.

Ability to develop a cooperative relationship with patients or work with uncooperative patients.


Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from a program in dental hygiene which is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.

Special Requirements: Eligibility for licensure as a Dental Hygienist in the State of Alaska.
