Job Description:

The Department of Fish & Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation, is recruiting for a short-term, non-permanent Fish & Wildlife Technician II in Palmer. This position will last up to 4-months and will run from May 15 through September 15, 2012.

This position will be based in Palmer. Duties will require frequent contact with the public. Communication and organizational skills and a willingness to collect biological information from harvested animals are needed to perform the duties of this position.

Under the direction of the supervising Wildlife Biologist, the incumbent in this position will be responsible for the following duties:

  1. Assist area office staff by responding to inquires about wildlife, interpreting hunting and fishing regulations, issuing permits, and distributing informational materials.
  2. Assist the pubic in obtaining licenses and permits through the internet.
  3. Assist area biologists by collecting information about hunter harvested animals, attaching seals, and entering harvest data.
  4. Participate in wildlife survey in fixed-wing aircraft and assist in the collection of field data.
  5. Accurately record, organize, and summarize data collected
  6. Assist area biologists in resolving nuisance wildlife issues in an urban environment.
  7. Other duties as assigned

Firearms will be necessary when in field camps and during captures.

Our ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following Desired Strengths(these traits must be documented in the cover letter and applicant profile):

  • Experience working daily in a public information or customer service field demonstrating strong oral communication skills and an exceptional ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in sometimes difficult situations with a variety of personnel and public.
  • Experience interpreting and answering questions relating to hunting and fishing regulation.
  • Experience using computers and computer software, especially Microsoft Word and Excel, to conduct routine biological data entry, simple analysis or output.
  • Experience with the issuing of hunting and fishing licenses, harvest tickets, locking tags, and permits
  • Experience handling harvested wildlife for the purpose of reporting and sealing
  • Experience collecting and organizing biological data.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school graduation.
OR
Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. This experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician I with the State of Alaska.
OR
Six months of work experience involving fish or wildlife, or outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory.

Special Requirements: Exposure to animals, insects and inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
