This is a seasonal position. It is scheduled to be staffed from 05/01/2013 to 08/31/2013.

Job Description:

The Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G), Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician III to assist with the protection and management of the Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary. This is a permanent, seasonal position that serves as the Assistant Sanctuary Manager at Round Island from May 1st through August 15th. The Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary is located about 80 miles southwest of Dillingham and approximately 35 miles south-southeast of Togiak in Bristol Bay. It protects one of the largest and most consistently used haul outs for Pacific walruses, as well as several hundred thousand seabirds, hundreds of Steller sea lions, and other marine and terrestrial wildlife.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring and data collection of sanctuary resources including walrus, seabirds, and Steller sea lions
  • Operating visitor use and permitting program
  • Maintaining camp facilities

The successful applicant will live and work in a remote field camp with one other ADF&G employee on a remote island in Bristol Bay. Accommodations are primitive and include a cabin, tents, outhouses, and other amenities typical of a remote wilderness setting. Amenities such as running water, electricity and telephone are limited and there are no other residents or community on or near Round Island. Access to the island is by boat and/or small aircraft. Communication is by radio or satellite phone and is limited. Direct contact with people (other than the one coworker) is limited to the occasional sanctuary visitors and may be as infrequent as several days to several weeks. Maritime storms are common in this region and work will be conducted in harsh field conditions including wet, cool, foggy, and windy weather. Duties will be conducted by small boat and while hiking along primitive trails that include wet, muddy conditions, steep slopes and working near cliff edges.

The employee will be expected to operate and maintain small skiffs (20' and less) with outboard motors. The work schedule will be variable and may include early mornings, late evenings, split shifts, and/or weekend and holiday work. Transportation off of Round Island during off-duty periods is not practical.

The successful candidate will have some or all of the following Desired Strengths (All of the following strengths must be documented in your cover letter and applicant profile. If you don't have experience with one or more of the strengths listed below, simply say so.):

  • Experience with monitoring wildlife including ground and boat-based surveys of marine mammals (experience with Pacific walrus and Steller sea lions is preferred)
  • Experience with monitoring nesting colonial seabirds including identification of species and determining population trends and nesting productivity
  • Experience with collecting and entering field data and providing summaries and draft reports
  • Experience with representing a natural resource agency and operating a visitor use program. This includes issuing access permits; collecting permit fees; operating a small campground; monitoring visitor use; and providing information on available facilities, operations, and safety procedures.
  • Experience with maintaining facilities and equipment including carpentry, painting, repairing trails and boardwalks, small boats, outboard motors, small generators, and other items typically found in a remote field camp
  • Experience with operating hand tools, radio and communication equipment, solar power systems, and small electric generators
  • Experience with safely operating small boats with outboard motors in a marine environment in rough sea and weather conditions
  • Experience with protecting wildlife and other resources, which includes enforcing rules and regulations, documenting violations, and cooperating with law enforcement agencies such as Alaska State Troopers and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service law enforcement personnel
  • Experience with living and working in a remote location with minimal supervision and minimal human contact in inclement weather conditions
