Job Description:

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG), Division of Wildlife Conservation, Wildlife Diversity Program is recruiting a full-time permanent Wildlife Biologist III in Juneau.

The position will concentrate on status reviews and listing proposals under the Endangered Species Act (ESA); assist staff biologists in compiling biological information to inform the ADFG’s scientific positions and conservation planning efforts; provide critical review of available information; and conduct selected small-scale field and/or office data gathering and analysis projects.

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with ADFG staff to evaluate and respond to pre-listing decisions, proposed federal rules, and listing petitions, as well as revisions or amendments of State Wildlife Action Plans, species’ recovery plans, and other conservation planning efforts;
  • Assisting staff in identification of funding opportunities to conduct research on candidate and listed Threatened and Endangered (TE) species, and administer, implement, and evaluate project success;
  • Completing Environmental Reviews, including gathering and summarizing scientific comments on project impacts to listed species;
  • Coordinating and enhancing conservation of TE species throughout Alaska;
  • Collaborating with ADFG staff to implement conservation strategies, develop partnerships, and focus program efforts on high-priority species and habitats; and
  • Working cooperatively with other state, federal, university, and non-profit organizations engaged in wildlife conservation activities.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic, thoughtful, and self-motivated biologist able to critically evaluate scientific information, ask insightful questions, follow protocols, creatively solve problems, and work independently as well as part of a team. This position offers a variety of office, travel, and fieldwork experiences along with opportunities to work with individuals from several different agencies and organizations.

  1. Experience with technical and professional scientific writing, including preparing issue papers; a demonstrated ability to write clearly;
  2. Experience working with or implementing the federal Endangered Species Act, including listing proposals and Section 7 & 10 consultations;
  3. Skill in evaluating and using scientific information to inform policy and management decisions;
  4. Experience designing research projects, including hypothesis testing, and quantitative population assessments (e.g., surveys, marking, and modeling) for a variety of fish and wildlife species;
  5. Experience in population genetics, phylogenetics, and analysis and interpretation of data on genetic diversity and gene flow;
  6. Experience developing species risk assessments, conservation plans, recovery plans, best management guidelines, or regulations to conserve wildlife and habitat;
  7. Skill in interacting with the public and giving scientific and other public presentations, as well as verbal and written briefings for policy and decision makers;
  8. Experience collaborating with multiple agencies or organizations. Strong interpersonal communication skills with an ability to work effectively and respectfully with others from varying backgrounds and perspectives;
  9. Experience writing grants or other funding proposals;
  10. Experience developing and monitoring project budgets;
  11. Ability to travel, work on weekends, occasionally work long or irregular hours, and camp and work out-of-doors under rigorous, remote, and adverse field conditions. Willing and able to work in both rotor- and fixed-wing aircraft, and a variety of watercraft.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of full performance professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Wildlife Biologist II, Fishery Biologist II, or Habitat Biologist II with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.
